Popis

As Nodipecten corallinoides:
Description. - Shell solid, longer than wide. Valves inequilateral, right valve slightly more convex than left one. Left valve with 9 nodose ribs, right valve 10 ribs, with the nodulations less pronounced. Anterior auricles 1.71- 1.77 times larger than posterior ones. Anterior auricle of right valve 4 ribs, left valve 5-6 ribs. Posterior auricle right valve 5-7 ribs, left valve 5-8. Microsculpture consisting of smooth riblets covering the whole disk, with imbricately arranged U-shaped lamellae in between. Top angle varying from 88°-96°. Colour orange to stone red, white, cream and yellow. Colour pattern consist of a uniform orange to stone red colour with white, cream or yellow dots. Dimensions. -One of the larger specimens examined measured 28.2 mm height x 27.2 mm width x 11.2 mm depth, although it must be noted that I have seen larger specimens to approximally 40 mm height.
Distribution. - This species is rarely found off the coast of Spain, Azores and Morocco, and more commonly at the Canary Islands and Cape Verde. Remarks. - This species can not be considered a truly European shell, but as it is occasionally found off the Spanish coast it is included in this study. The often in literature repeated record from Zanzibar of N. corallinoides, alludes to a by Reeve (1852) misidentified specimen of N. noduliferus (Sowerby 2nd, 1847).
Wagner H P 1991 - Review of the European Pectinidae
Type Locality: Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands.
Original Description: "Testa crassa, inflata, ruba, striis longitudinaliter, subsquamoso-scabris ornata; radiis 8, aut 9, crassis, elevatis, rotundatis, nodosis." (fide d'Orbigny, 1839)
Additional Description: Shell equivalve, inequilateral and moderately convex. Both valves with 9 to 10 nodose ribs, and the entire surface is covered with strong close-set radiating cords. Auricles very unequal. Coloration extremely variable from white, cream, yellow, orange or red; either uniform or mottled. Size: Normal adult size range is 25 to 40 mm.
Distribution: From Portugal to Cape Verde, including the Azores and the Canary Islands.
Habitat: Littoral to sublittoral zones, under rocks on sandy or gravelly bottoms.
Remarks: Some authors place this species under Nodipecten Dall, 1898, however, its overall characteristics are closer to Bractechlamys.
