AS Tellina serrata
Habitat: it lives on muddy-detrital bottoms of the circalittoral zone. Distribution: it can be found all over the Mediterranean. Never common.
Two juvenile shells were collected from a shoal area 6 mile off Castelsardo (Sassari - Sardinia - Italy) at 55 m depth, other shells were found at Baratti Gulf (Leghorn - Tuscany - Italy) at 40 m depth.
Notes: outline and sculpture of this species make it easily recognizable from its similar ones. Shell solid, suboval in outline, valves compressed, umbo centrally placed, not much protuberant (more protuberant as far as juvenile specimens are concerned), anterior margin roundish, posterior margin obliquely truncated. Carina, starting from umbo and reaching lower margin, makes it angular almost forming a sort of beak. Ventral margin quite roundish. It has a typical sculpture made by concentric lamellae close and prominent becoming broader in the posterior zone. Internal margin smooth. Sculpture is quite evident all over surface even in juvenile specimens having a ridger outline. Hinge made by two cardinal teeth prominent on any single valve. Left valve has lateral teeth not much developed. Palleal sinus very deep. External ligament prominent, brown in colour, placed behind umbo. Grey in colour with umbos often yellowish. Average measures of adult specimens reach 35-40 mm in length.
