Habitat: it lives in the littoral zone on sandy and muddy bottoms, but it is found in bigger depths too. Distribution: common enough all over the Mediterranean where, locally, there can be found very numerous populations.
Notes: shell oval in form, very compressed, brittle, anteriorly large and roundish. Posterior side truncated, one carina, starting from umbo and reaching the inferior margin, makes it angular and it forms one bow. There are also some radial folds. Umbo almost central. Surface smooth with concentric striae more evident on the ventral margin which is convex. Ground dirty white in colour with shades either pink or yellow, more evident in the valves central part, clear inside the same ones too. Periostracum thin, either brown or grey in colour, clearer in the marginal areas.
Juvenile specimens are subtriangular in outline, apex protuberant, valves sculpture quite prominent. Some varieties set up by de Gregorio (1885) as: anti/la, apina, parita, petraliensis, have no taxonomic value. The adult specimens average measures are around 60 mm in length.
