This species is a member of the Panamic fauna, but in warm-water years larvae have been known to settle as far north as San Pedro, California (33.7°N) [CAS]. It is unlikely that reproducing populations are present north of Isla Cedros, Baja California (28.2°N) [LACM]; from San Felipe, Baja California (31.0°N) [LACM] to Paita, Peru (5.1 °S) [CAS], and the Islas Galapagos (1.0°S) [LACM], in the intertidal zone to 120 m. Recorded as early as the Pliocene in western North America.
