Shell wide, almost as high. Conical, heavy; whitish or yellowish-white, with purplish-black splotches arranged in an irregular zigzag pattern. Whorls convex, with obscure, irregularly rough, slanting ribs and obscure spiral ridges. Body whorl rounded at periphery. Base smooth, pale with a few black markings. Umbilicus deep, funnel-shaped. Aperture round, white; upper part of inner lip with thick white callus bearing a short projection. Operculum circular, brown, horny, multispiral, with a central nucleus.

This large top shell is abundant in the West Indies, where it is commonly used by the natives for food. It once occurred in the Florida Keys, as evidenced by the occasional dead shells that are found there. The genus Cittarium was formerly called Livona.
In rocky areas, intertidally to just below low-tide level.
