Diagnostic characters
Shell tall and slender with blunt apex, tumid whorls and deep sutures; with many fine spiral ridges but lacking costae. Aperture oval. Posterior end of foot cleft in mid-line.
Other characters
The shell is semitransparent. narrow (apical angle c. 25°). The spiral lines are numerous - up to 40 on the last whorl, 16-18 on the penult - but low and delicate. The protoconch is large, 450 µm across. The yellow, tan or orange colour is due to the periostracum and the underlying shell is white. Up to 3 mm high, 1.25 mm broad; last whorl occupies two thirds of the total height, the aperture about one third.
The animal has neither pallial nor metapodial tentacles. The posterior cleft in the foot is visible through the operculum of a retracted animal.
C. proxima ranges from the Mediterranean north to the British Isles where it is now apparently limited to some sites between the Scillies and the Hebrides, but is nowhere common. It lives sublittorally and may be dredged from muddy bottoms at 30-50 m.
