Shell trochiform, imperforate, with a flat base, last whorl somewhat keeled; often sculptured with spiral lines or nodules; mouth oblique; outer lip thin; operculum horny.
TYPE SPECIES Trochus melanostoma Gmelin, 1789.
Risella Gray, 1847, is an absolute synonym of this genus and was used previously by Australian conchologists for these shells.
Shells of this genus show considerable variation in shape and colour, and this has led, in the past, to a number of species being described. However, recent work by Mrs Hilda Anderson shows that there are three species in south-eastern Australia, and that all other names are synonyms of one or other of these.
