Shell cup-shaped, smooth or ribbed with apex distinctly coiled. Without operculum, mainly living in warm seas. The egg capsules remain within the mantle cavity of the maternal animal. Amathinids are similar to capulids in shape and sculpture but amathinids are bisexual These shells differs from hip-ponicids in having a coiled apex.
Amathina Gray, 1842 is the main genus which is ribbed to the anterior margin. Genus Trichoamathina Oyama , 1961 is a hairy Amathina.
