Kronenberg and Burger (2002) recognised the family ROSTELLARIIDAE Gabb, 1868 as distinct form the family STROMBIDAE Rafinesque, 1815, based primarily on conchological characteristics, including a very high spire, development of the rostrum, digits or projections on the outer lip and characteristics of the operculum. Kronenberg and Burger (2002) further went on to recognise several genera within the family ROSTELLARIIDAE Gabb, 1868, for the recent fauna Tibia Roding, 1798, Rostellariella Thiele, 1929 and Rimellopsis, Lambiotte, 1979.
