Popis

Shell solid, bright, stretched, whorls convex, suture evident but not deep. Sculpture made by axial ribs (about 12 on the last whorl) roundish and in different thickness, joining among them near suture, sometimes making one spined protuberance too.There are often present varices. Among the interspaces of ribs there can be noted fine spiral striae. Aperture roundish in form, peristome continuous, that thickening, makes a columellar callum (dark brown in colour) at the crossing with the ribs, closing the umbilicus as a matter of fact. Ground colour dark brown either with bands or streaks lighter, but there can be found light specimens with darker bands too. Protoconch has about 4 whorls of spiral smooth. The adult specimens average measures are around 30-35 mm in height.

Shell. Differing in details from that of E. clathrus though similar in general appearance. The whorls (15 or so) meet at moderately deep sutures; the spire (apical angle c. 18°) is more nearly straight-sided; there are 12-15 costae on the last whorl and 13-16 on those of the spire, a few thickened as varices; the spire appears smoother than that of clathrus because the costae are flat, deeply undercut on the side which faces up the spire and expanded at their adapical ends into slightly ridged, flattened areas which are applied to the surface of the upper whorl mainly between costae (Fig.278); the extensions are long enough to reach the next adapertural costa and so cover the whole of the intervening sutural area; the costae tend to alternate from whorl to whorl so that the shell lacks the long spiral ridges of the other species; the spaces between costae show definite spiral striae; there is a slight rather irregularly folded ridge alongside the columella, half obscured by eversion of the inner lip.
Aperture. Much as in clathrus but the outer lip is more pointedly everted basally and the inner lip more everted alongside the columella.
Colour. As in clathrus, though often yellower or browner.
Size. 40X12mm. Last whorl = 40% of total shell height; aperture = 25% of the shell height.

E. turtonis is the type species of the subgenus Fusicoscala. It occurs throughout the Mediterranean Sea and attains a maximum size of about 37mm. Like E. clathrum, it occurs intertidally and offshore. It is an elongate species with up to 13-14 teleoconch whorls. There are about 11-14 flattened costae per whorl which turn back at an angle below the suture and which are occasionally thickened into varices. The color varies from tan to dark brown with 2-3 dark brown bands per whorl. The aperture is oval and the outer lip is thickened. The operculum is black.

Geographical distribution. Mediterranean, thence N. along the west coast of Europe to Norway. It occurs in the Kattegat.
Habitat, food. As for clathrus; recorded 5-20 m deep.
