Differential diagnosis (CROITOR & KOSTOPOULOS, 2004): a species somewhat more primitive than P. verticornis in more frequent presence of a vestigial basal tine, the lack of the middle tine and the circular transversal cross-section of pedicels; dichotomously branched distal part of the antlers; unlike P. obscurus, P. pliotarandoides has a reduced basal (spurious) tine that often is presented as a vestigial knob, a shorter second (outer) tine with circular transversal cross-section, a vertical position of antler base with respect to the burr plane and the antler beam curvature in the area of outer tine. The upper molars without protoconal fold or “hypoconal” spur; lingual wall of upper P2 not cleft; interior wall of premolar «hypocone» slightly folded; lower P4 highly molarized.
Diagnosis (CROITOR, 2006): The body size is very large. The proximal portion of antler has the frequently present small vestigial subbasal tine (it may be missing), the rather short cylindrical dorsal tine and the posterior tine. The middle tine is not developed. The antler beam normally forms a curve in the area of dorsal tine and turns upright in the area of posterior tine. The distal portion of antler forms three dichotomies that end with four crown tines. The pedicles are cylinder-shaped. The upper molars are without protoconal fold or hypoconal spur. The lingual wall of upper P2 not cleft. The interior wall of premolar hypocone is slightly folded. Lower P4 is molarized.
DE ALESSANDRI (1903: 11, fig. 4-5) proposed a new species name Cervus pliotarandoides for the left shed antler from the Villafranchian of Cortiglione Monferrato and suggested a great affinity of the new species to modern Rangifer. The description was accompanied with a figure and measurement of the antler. The formal species definition and type designation was not provided. PORTIS (1920) included C. pliotarandoides in the subgenus Cervus (Praerangifer). This subgeneric name must be regarded now as nomen oblitum. KAHLKE (1956) and AZZAROLI (1976, 1979) believed that C. pliotarandoides represents an individual variation of P. verticornis and included it in the synonymy of the latter species. CROITOR & KOSTOPOULOS (2004) concluded that Psekupsoceros orientalis RADULESCO & SAMSON is a junior synonym of Praemegaceros pliotarandoides (DE ALESSANDRI). The latter species name is valid.
