Description

Lucapina sowerbii (Sowerby II, 1835) Sowerby’s Fleshy Limpet
Distribution: Lower Florida, Texas; West Indies to Brazil. Size: 20 to 25 mm.
Description: Color from white to buff with approximately 7 to 9 spotted brown to tan radiating rays, some shells with unbroken rays or spot¬ted, interior glossy white with only darker patterns staining through in fresh shells; shell cap shaped; sculpture of alternating broad and narrow radiating ribs, between 9 and 13 spiral cords that produce distinct shallow, square grooves where ribs and cords intersect; anterior slope almost straight; posterior ridge slightly concave; orifice relatively large, located subcentrally yet more central than in L. philippiana. Habitat: Usually found in pairs under or on rocks in all types of environments; also found on offshore reefs. In Texas found at FGB. Depth range Oto 225 m (738 ft).
Remarks: Variable brown coloration; rays may be broken, continuous, or splotched. See Perez-Farfante (1943b); Redfern (2001). Synonym: L. adspersa Philippi, 1845.
