Description

Shell up to 26 mm in length (Pallary, 1904: 93) with 1.25-1.5 protoconch whorls and up to 5 teleoconch whorls. Protoconch small, smooth. Whorls rounded. Axial sculpture of last whorl consisting of 5-7 narrow, spinose ribs, each with 3 or 4 short, acute spines, occasionally with I or 2 additional spinelets. Other axial sculpture of numerous growth lamellae. Spiral sculpture of 3 narrow primary cords, occasionally with 1-3 shallow threads between each pair of cords. Aperture moderately small, ovate. Outer lip smooth, erect, with 5 weak denticles within. Columellar lip narrow, smooth, adherent. Siphonal canal moderately long, sealed. White or light tan. Interior of aperture pale brown.

Interchangeable taxa

This is probably the species named Murex acanthophorus Monterosato, 1875 (not M. acanthophorus A. Adams, 1863). M. acanthophorus Monterosato is not only preoccupied, but it is also a nude name, as it was never described nor illustrated. A new name, O. erroneus Monterosato. was given by Poirier (1883). but still without any description or illustration, thus still to be considered as a nude name.
The names minor and major given by Pallary (1906) are also nude names. Recently, Settepassi (1977) described and illustrated erroneus as Muricopsis erroneus Monterosato. His name is valid, the name erroneus being still available as it was only used as a nude name. The classification of that species in Muricopsis by Settepassi is erroneous. I have not yet observed the radula characters, but the sealed siphonal canal is a character of Ocinebrina and not of Muricopsis which always has an open canal. However. Settepassi's name is a junior synonym of O. hispidula.
The species is wrongly illustrated as Ocenehra acanthoplcrus Montrouzier (name partly retranscribed from a label in the USNM) by Kaicher (1979: 2060).
I decided to separate that species from O. edwardsi because I have not yet seen any intermediate specimens between O. edwardsi and O. hispidula. The shell of O. hispidula is usually narrower than O. edwardsi. it has a longer siphonal canal compared to its shell length, and is more spiny, with fewer primary spiral cords.

Distribution

Currently known from two localities: The Gulf of Gabes, Tunisia, and adjacent localities, Djerba, Gabes, Sfax, and southwest Cyprus, Macronisos, and Ayia Napa (coll. F. Swinnen).
