Description

Shell thick, solid, characterized by strong spiral cords, moderately developed subsutural spiral depression, weak subsutural fold, usually bearing axial riblets, and rather high spire (range 10-26%, usually 16-20%, of the shell height, average 17%). Diameter/height ratio range 39-56%, usually 43-53%. Remains of protoconch indicating brown, multispiral protoconch II with diagonally cancellate sculpture. Peripheral tubercles present on initial 4.5-6.0 teleoconch whorls. Obsolete to moderately deep subsutural spiral depression, axial ribbing on subsutural fold variable. Spiral cords always strong, but their width and the distance between cords may vary. Width of siphonal canal variable. Maximum dimensions: height 47.6 mm, diameter 22.6 mm. Radular teeth very small, mean tooth length 77-94 µm at shell height 23.0-29.1 mm (tooth length to shell height ratio 0.32-0.44%), with short base and straight, relatively long blade.

Interchangeable taxa

Buccinaria jonkeri is similar to B. martini, but differs by having a spiral sculpture of cords, rather than grooves, covering the entire height of the whorl, and by its less pronounced subsutural fold and spiral depression below it. Noda (1988) illustrated a similar shell under the name Buccinaria (Ootomella) loochooensis but this appears to be a misidentification since the latter species is characterized by a much weaker spiral sculpture and higher spire (Figs. 52-56). In the same paper, Noda (1988: pi. 11, figs. 12a-12b) illustrated as B. teramachii a shell which appears practically identical to the holotype of P. pyrum.

Distribution

Fossil: Miocene to Pliocene, Timor, Borneo, Ceram, and Nias Islands (Indonesia), and Okinawa (Japan). Recent: off southern Japan in 100 - 200 m, Taiwan, Philippines and Indonesia, alive in 246 - 416 m, shells down to 595 m.
