This species may be compared with 2 more or less closely related species: Chicoreus laqueatus (Sowerby, 1841) and Pterynotus (Pterynotus) martinetana (Roding, 1798). From the first it differs by its aperture, more rounded and more denticulate for P. laqueatus which shows also fewer spiral cords, a shorter siphonal canal and in which the varices are ornamented with longer webbed spines. From P. martinetana it differs by its number of varices, the spiral cords, the more denticulate aperture for P. martinetana, which also has a different columellar lip and protoconch.
