Description

Elongated oval, left valve slightly larger, longer posteriorly, inflated, solid, white with light to dark brown thick periostracum, with 30-38 medially cut radial ribs crossing commarginal ridges forming weak beads, no byssal gape; interior white, margin coarsely denticulate, cardinal area wide, hinge line straight. North Carolina to Florida, West Indies, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Central America, South America (Venezuela). Length 65 mm (to 90 mm). Compare with Anadara baughmani which has fewer radial ribs that are faintly or not radially grooved.

Anadara floridana (Conrad, 1869) Distribution: North Carolina to Texas; Greater Antilles. Size: 63 to 102 mm (2½ to 4 in). Cut-ribbed Ark Description: Color white; shape obliquely rectangular; sculpture of modular radial ribs with fine concentric riblets crossing over radial ribs; hinge long with numerous comblike vertical teeth that become smaller toward the center; ligamental area long and narrow; pallial line simple. Habitat: Beaches along entire Texas coast. Depth range 0 to 110 m (360 ft). Remarks: Found alive on SPI. Living, large-sized animals are rare but are probably located at depths from 14 to 47 m (48 to 156 ft). See Odé (1978b).
