Description

The study of the Mediterranean specimens suggested to several authors (Crucitti & Rotella, 1991 among them) the need to separate them at an under specific level.
Shell biconic in form, solid, with a carina next the sutur. The protoconch has convex whorls and it is smooth fully. The first whorls of the teleconch have some axial ribs crossed by spiral striae. The aperture is elongated with a fold next the siphonal canal which is short and open.
The ground colour pattern is dirty white with several irregular brown spiral streaks. The average measures are abt. 40-45 mm.
Scaperrotta, M. ,Bartolini, S. & Bogi, C., 2009. Accrescimenti, Vol. 1. Stages of growth of marine molluscs of the Mediterranean Sea. (secondary description)
50mm. Heavy, dull; short, pointed spire, last whorl triangular in outline. Thick, smooth columellar callus. Thin-edged lip with shallow stromboid notch. Shallow siphonal canal. Smooth keel at shoulder of last whorl. Fine axial striae cover shell. White with pale brown streaks and interrupted spiral bands. Columella white; aperture white or pale pink. Syn: S. beluchiensis Melvill, 1901,5. mauritianus Lamarck, 1822. Habitat: intertidal in sand.
Bosch, D.T., Dance, S.P., Moolenbeek, R.G. en Oliver, G., 1995. Seashells of Eastern Arabia.

Distribution

Distribution: it is an Indo-Pacific species. It has a planktonic larva and it is spreading very quickly. It was collected in several localities of the Levant Sea and of the Greek Islands, above all, plentifully, along the Israeli coasts where it is locally invasive. It was found in the North Adriatic too (De Min & Vio, 1998).

Habitat: as per all the Strombus, this species is herbivorous and it feeds on algae. It lives on mixed bottoms: rocks, sand, mud, in a bay habitat at low hydrodynamism.
