Description

Lucapina aegis (Reeve, 1850) Shield Fleshy Limpet
Distribution: Bahamas; Florida, Texas; Cuba to Brazil. Size: 25 to 33 mm.
Description: Color light brownish-green, usually with 8 dark, broken radial rays, coloration suffused through to inner surface; shell cap shaped, thin and conically depressed; sculpture of about 40 major radiating ribs with minor ribs between, crossed by thinner concentric ribs, producing slightly curved scales where they intersect; orifice narrow, oblong, exterior side of orifice slightly denticulate, interior portion of orifice callused; base of shell oblong and somewhat crenulate.
Habitat: Found on hard substrate from depths of 0 to 55 m (180 ft). In Texas found on offshore coral banks.
Remarks: Abbott (1974) states this species is found intertidally to about 18 m (60 ft). In Texas most specimens have come from depths of 18 to 33 m (60 to 108 ft). This species is similar to L. sowerbii, differing by having a denticulate orifice, larger radial ribs, and smaller concentric ribs. See Perez-Farfante (1943b); Ode (1988d); Redfern (2001).
