Description

Prothalotia lesueuri: Lesueur's Top Shell or Elegant Top Shell. Shell conical, whorls subangulate; reddish or sometimes brownish with more or less wide axial white stripes; whorls seven, flattened, with a tendency to swell above the suture and at the periphery of the body whorl which is roundly subangulate and a little deflected at the aperture; whorls encircled by fine lirae; columella and apertural features as in P. ramburi Crosse. Diameter 12 mm., height 16 mm.
Cotton, B.C., 1959. South Australian Mollusca. Archaeogastropoda.

Interchangeable taxa

Prothalotia lesueuri: Closely related is T. lehmanni Menke 1843 from Western Australia which we have from King George Sound, Fremantle and Geraldton. This has wider axial white rays, a type of colouration met with in some S.A. specimens. It is probable that the differences are only sub-specific. Prothalotia lesueuri can be distinguished from P. ramburi by the medially angled whorls, red aperture margin and more defined axial flames.
