Description

Conus armiger Crosse, 1858 Mace Cone
Distribution: Florida, Texas; Mexico; Colombia. Size: 40 mm.
Description: Color creamish-white with numerous squares of orangish-brown; shape biconic; sculpture of broadly flattened spiral ribs interrupted by axially striate grooves; spaces between ribs with fine axial riblets; spiral ribs with squarish punctae; spire tall and pointed; aperture narrow and long; outer lip thin; spiral ribs prominent at base. Habitat: Sandy bottoms offshore at depths from 35 to 227 m (115 to 757 ft). Remarks: Similar to C cancellatus Hwass, 1792, but the shoulder in C cancellatus is carinate, it lacks nodules, and ribs are without punctae. See Ode (1973c); Walls (1979). Synonym: C. clarki Rehder and Abbott, 1951.
