Description

Height/length 0,75, apex high, strongly recurved and projecting posteriorly, laterally rather compressed; selenizone slightly sunken, lunulae rather low, dorsally-directed, 5-8 per mm; sculpture of about 46 close, rounded radial ribs, alternately weaker and stronger, with a smaller secondary rib between each pair; six anterior ribs are stronger than the others; concentric threads regular, overriding radials, subequal to secondary ribs, forming low, almost squamiform nodules; interstices chalky, pit-like, mainly divided into pairs by a microlirule; pale olivaceous, with dark olive-green dots on secondary ribs and borders of anal slit; maximum length 6,9 mm. Description: Basal outline oblong-ovate, greatest width just posterior to middle; height/length 0,75; apex very high, strongly recurved, projecting slightly beyond posterior margin, inclined slightly to the right; posterior face very concave, sides slightly so, anterior face strongly arched, base gently concave. Anal slit narrow, fairly deep; bordering flanges thin, raised, crenulate slightly inclined; left termination projecting slightly beyond right; selenizone slightly sunken, with rather low, dorsally-directed lunulae, 5-8 per mm, more or less corresponding to concentric lirae; selenizone forming a callous ridge internally. Sculpture of close-set, rounded radial ribs, totalling about 46; alternate main ribs are weaker and strong, and each interval is occupied by an even weaker secondary rib; three main ribs on either side of anal slit distinctly stronger than the rest. Concentric threads very regular and overriding the radials, subequal to secondary ribs in strength; they are dorsally directed, and form low, almost squamiform nodules where they cross the ribs, being most strongly developed anteriorly. Interstices foveolate, chalky, and for the most part divided into radially elongate, paired pits by a flattened microradial. Inner ventral margin pliculate. Colour very pale olivaceous, with traces of faint brownish blotches laterally, secondary radial ribs and flanges bordering anal slit with scattered dark olive-green dots; interior whitish, with the external coloration showing through. Dimensions: 6,9 (basal length) x 4,8 x 5,2 mm, anal slit 3,0 mm deep (holotype).

Interchangeable taxa

E. connelli is one of the most conical and strongly recurved of Indo-Pacific Emarginula, although scarcely approaching the extremely elevated E. choristes Dall, 1925, of Japan. Of South African species it is perhaps closest to natalensis, but is more elevated and distinctly coloured, with more uneven radial ribs, of which the anterior ones are somewhat differentiated; in the latter respect it perhaps resembles E. thorektes, but is much more elevated, with a more posterior apex, higher anal flanges and sculptural differences. Of Indo-Pacific Emarginula, the presence of black dots would ally it to E. variegata, punctata and puncticulata of A. Adams, 1852, all from the tropical Western Pacific; these three are more ovate in outline, and the apex is lower, not terminal, and only moderately recurved. E. paucipunctata Schepman, 1908, from Indonesia, and E. souverbiana Pilsbry, 1890, from New Caledonia, are more depressed, with coarser ribs and a non-terminal apex. E. maculata A. Adams, 1863, and E. compta Habe, 1953, from Japan, have large spots; the former is more depressed and the latter has a more openly cancellate sculpture. Another Japanese species, E. teremachii Habe, 1953, appears to be also comparable, but is less com¬pressed and evidently differs in details of sculpture and colour. The interstitial pits in E. connelli resemble those of E. natalensis .
