Description

Chicoreus artemis: The shell is small to moderate in size (maximum length 60 mm) and fusiform. Its spire is moderately high, consisting of nine postnuclear whorls and a protoconch of undetermined nature. The suture is impressed. The body whorl is small to moderate in size and suborbicular. The aperture is broadly ovate, with a posterior anal sulcus delimited on each side by an elongate spiral ridge. The outer apertural lip is erect and crenulate at its margin, with lirae extending from the crenulations into the interior. The columellar lip is detached and erect. The siphonal canal is short, moderately broad above, and tapering below.
The body whorl bears three varices, each ornamented with several short to moderately long, recurved spines. Other axial sculpture consists of one or two intervarical ridges, these strongly nodose at the shoulder. Spiral sculpture consists of several major cords, these intercalated with markedly imbricate minor cords. Where the major cords intersect the varices, the spines are developed. Where persistent, two spines per varix are present on the spire. Four or five major spines are generally developed on the body whorl. Two smaller, ventrally bent spines are found immediately below the shoulder spine. In addition, another smaller, ventrally bent spine may follow the second major spine.
Shell color ranges from pink to red-orange, the early whorls of deeper hue, with yellow suffusion. The more prominent spiral elements are red-brown on their crests. The aperture interior is white, suffused with rose-pink at the mouth.
