Lucapinella limatula (Reeve, 1850) File Fleshy Limpet
Distribution: North Carolina to Florida, Texas; West Indies; Brazil. Size: 6 to 15 mm.
Description: Color variable, from white, yellow, brown, to pink, some exterior coloration stained through to inner surface; shell flattened, cap shaped, small, and slightly attenuate anteriorly; sculpture consists of radiating ribs with ribs originating at orifice; spiral sculpture of fine spiral ribs, creating a beaded appearance at intersection; orifice toward center of shell, callused interiorly; base ovate, margin of base thickened and finely crenulate.
Habitat: On rocks and shells at depths from 0 to 146 m (479 ft). In Texas found alive on oyster shells in bays south of Corpus Christi. Remarks: Rare species. Similar to L. callomarginata Dall, 1889, a Panamic Province species. In specimens from SPI, a blackish ring encircles the interior callus. See Perez-Farfante (1943b); Ode (1988d); Redfern (2001).
