The following is taken, with modifications, from Gertman (1969):
"Shell with four varices terminating in spines at the shoulder margin; four tubes midway between varices pointing dorsally and somewhat posteriorly; spiral sculpture often present, varical flange short, recurved, variously spiny."
The holotype of the type species is apparently lost, and no specimens definitely identified as T. belcheri have been found subsequently. The limits of the genus are thus dependent on two moderately clear figures in the Conchological Illustrations. We can verify only T. belcheri (whatever that may prove to be) as truly Typhina. Several other species, however, have been assigned to that taxon by subsequent authors and, until we have a clearer concept of Typhina, rather than erecting a possibly unnecessary generic taxon wc shall treat these species as belonging to Typhina, for which the reader may read "Typhina of authors."

Remarks. The genera Typhisala Jousseaume, 1881 and Typhisopsis Jousseaume, 1880 are here synonymized with Typhina Jousseaume, 1880 based on the molecular phylogentic tree that places Typhis grandis A. Adams, 1855 and Typhis coronatus Broderip, 1833, the respective type species of the two former genera, in the same clade with the other Typhina species included in the molecular analysis.
Short description: Presence of a laminar extension; teleoconch whorls with four flange-like or rounded, ropelike, frilled axial varices; varix with curved, sharp, shoulder spine; varical flange broadly expanded adapically, extending to midway or almost the tip of siphonal canal; occasionally with weak or moderately strong spiral sculpture; anal tube originating near pre-ceding varix. Average length of the type species: 21mm.
