Shell similar to Clavatula, but with a shallow anal sinus and large papilliform apex, false-umbilicus usually distinct; radula toxoglossate; nucleus of operculum anterior to middle. The distinctive radula, with double-barbed, hollow marginals, with or without vestigial rachidians, clearly separates this taxon from other members of the subfamily in which the radula consists of rachidians and slipper-shaped, duplex marginals. Under the classification of McLean (1971) Toxiclionella would have to be referred to the subfamily Zonulispirinae (as was done by Kilburn & Rippey 1982) or Borsoniinae. I agree with Powell (1966) that the clavatuline operculum and shell demonstrate its close relationship with the Clavatulinae.
