Popis

Measurements up to 8x5 mm, with 5 whorls. General shape moderately high, similar to that of T. pullus picta with upper part of whorls somewhat flattened. Surface smooth and glossy, with moderately distinct growth lines and extremely fine spiral microsculpture visible on all fresh shells. Shell material somewhat translucent, tending to become opaque and porcellanous in gerontic specimens. Aperture oval-rounded, tending to somewhat angular at lower junction of pillar lip. Inner lip appressed, but may show a slight thickening over the surface of the last whorl. Colour pattern. Colour pattern includes one or two tones of reddish and/or brown on a translucent to orange or tan background. This background often shows confused banding. There may be in addition to this some small opaque-white markings. Most commonly, the general pattern is similar to that of T. pullus picta but more delicate, with brown flames under the suture, and zigzag oblique lines and blotches on the whorls. There is very constantly a series of oblique lines starting upwards from the columella. Frequently, the oblique lines in the middle parts of whorls arc replaced by sets of dots or small blotches regularly displayed along the oblique directions. The columella is characteristically tinged with orange in most individuals, a unique feature among the representatives of the genus in the area.

Možné záměny

T. pullus canarica differs from T. pullus picta by
(1) more conspicuous spiral microsculpture as a rule;
(2) rather angular outline in lower part of aperture; and
(3) orange tinge on the columella.
It differs from T. pullus azorica by the two latter features, by a larger size and by the generally two-tone polychromatism. Conspicuousness of the spiral microsculpture is a trend but is not diagnostic since a faint striation can be seen under favourable conditions on some T. pullus pullus and T. pullus picta

Rozšíření

This subspecies is restricted to the Canary Islands and Madeira, on which it seems to be the only representative of the genus. It has not been recorded from the Selvagem archipelago. In our opinion, all continental records of T. pullus canarica, including that of Nordsieck (1973) for Vigo should be referred to T. pullus picta. Habitat of T. pullus canarica has been found in the infralittoral, on seaweed (e.g. Cystoseira) in moderately surfed localities.
