Popis

Shell to 36.0 mm in length, conical and solid, spire elevated and concave, teleoconch of 4.5-5 concavo-convex whorls, protoconch worn in specimens examined; sculptured with rows of coarse nodules which number 2-3 on the penultimate and 2-3 on the shoulder of the body whorl, followed by 13-18 shallow and occasionally finely striate spiral grooves; nodules at the angulate shoulder of the body whorl give the shell the appearance of being bluntly coronate. Aperture considerably longer than the spire, narrow, smooth within, outer lip thickened and obsoletely crenulate basally, lower part of columella calloused and with 6-7 oblique folds. Base color white under a brown periostracum of varying density, spire whorls marbled with brown, body white.

The species is superficially similar to P. dactylus (Linnaeus) but differs in its coniform shape, concave spire and coarsely granulose spire sculpture. Like in P. dactylus, the thickness and color of the periostracum is subject to great variation, often depending on the substratum. In some individuals the periostracum is worn away.
