Cancellaria reticulata (Linnaeus, 1767) Common Nutmeg
Distribution: North Carolina to Florida, Texas; Caribbean to Brazil. Size: 55 mm .
Description: Color variable, can have a base color of white to brown with axial or spiral splotches and/or bands of different shades, nuclear whorls yellowish-brown, smooth and bulbous; shape broadly ovate; sculpture of axial and spiral cords, producing cancellate, beaded appearance; upper whorls shouldered; postnuclear whorls to body whorl with 4 beaded cords each; body whorl with 12 to 16 beaded cords; fine spiral threads may be between whorls; aperture semilunar; apertural lip crenulate with internal dentition; columella with distinct columellar and siphonal folds.
Habitat: In sand and grass beds from shoreline to a depth of 73 m (240 ft). In Texas common offshore.
