Shell small, 18 to 30 mm with a moderate high spire. There are 7 to 8 whorls, at first rounded but from the fourth whorl subangulate. This subangulate appearance is the result of a strong shoulder cord. This cord bears rounded, only very slightly elongated knobs, on the penultimate whorl approximately 14 in number. Under the shoulder cord there is another distinct cord which also bears rounded knobs and a third cord which is less pronounced. The outer lip has three well developed digits of which the first one always is attached to the spire over its entire length. The second and third digit, of almost equal size, are continuations of the upper two cords of the bodywhorl. Just below the third digit there is a small, nearly rudimentary fourth digit. The rostrum is of a medium size and never broadened at the base. The colour varies from pale yellowish-brown to brown, sometimes greyish. In subadult specimens, the margin of the flaring outer lip is brown.
