Babelomurex mansfieldi (McGinty, 1940) Staircase Coral Shell
Distribution: Texas, Florida, Gulf of Mexico to Panama; Brazil. Size: 31 mm.
Description: Color yellowish-white, interior of aperture white; shape ovate with extended spire; sculpture of flattened spiral ribs intersected by axial riblets on the surface of the ribs and inner spaces, producing a sheen; postnuclear whorls with 1 strong, spiny spiral cord followed by 3 spiral cords; body whorl with 1 strong spiral cord followed by numerous spiral cords that extend to the base of the shell; nuclear whorls smooth; umbilicus funnel shaped.
Habitat: Calcareous environments and sand at depths from 1 to 177 m (3 to 580 ft). Remarks: Usually under rocks and other hard substrates. See Ode (1973c); Redfern (2001); Garcia and Lee (2002).
