Shark Eye
Distribution: Cape Ann, Massachusetts, to Florida to Texas. Size: 25 to 63 mm
Description: Grayish to light brown, older whorls darker; shape globose; sculpture smooth with fine, radial growth lines; spire slightly elevated; aperture ovate; outer lip thin; umbilicus deep, almost entirely closed by a thick callus; periphery of umbilicus without a ridge; operculum corneous, glossy.
Habitat: Shallow water of bays, estuaries, and Gulf of Mexico. On Texas coast found at depths from shoreline to about 47 m (158 ft). Found in deeper water than N. delessertiana. Depth range 0 to 58 m (190 ft).
Remarks: Active predator on other mollusks. Common on Texas coast. See Andrews (1977); Ode (1982b); Hulsken et al. (2006). Synonym: Polinices duplicata (Say, 1822).
