Original Description: "T. oblique ovata, compressa; auriculis subaequalibus, margine serrato, radiatim sulcatis, ad basin emarginatis; lateribus striatis; costis 13, triangulatis, elevatis, laevibus; interstitiis angustis, bisulcatis, crenatis: colore pallide fulvo, fasciis et punctis et lineis rubris variegato; intus albo; Long, 0.80; lat. 0.25; alt. 0.85; poll." (fide G. B. Sowerby II, 1842)
Additional Description: "Obliquely ovate, compressed, striated at the sides; ears nearly equal, (the edge of that of the under valve serrated,) radiately striated, emarginated at the base; dull white variegated with broad irregular bands fine transverse lines and spots of red; the thirteen ribs square at the top with slanting sides, the interstices narrow, defined by two small grooves and crenulated: inside white." (Hanley, 1855 description of P pictus) Size: Normal adult size range is 20 to 25 mm.
Distribution: Found throughout the western Pacific from southern Japan to Indonesia, and as far west as the Solomon Islands.
Habitat: Littoral zone, on sandy bottoms between coral rubble.
Remarks: De Gregorio recognized that the name was preoccupied, so he simply renamed R pictus G. B. Sowerby II, 1842.
