NUCLEATED BATHYARK Arca (Bathyarca) nucleator Dall, 1908c: 397. Shell ovate, inflated, equilateral, length equal to or slightly greater than height. Dorsal margin straight, squared at ends. Sculpture delicate, cancellate. Hinge plate narrow, straight; teeth oblique anteriorly, horizontal posteriorly, 4-8 on each side. Periostracum densely hirsute; setae short. Length to 10 mm.
The relationship of this species to the mid-North Pacific Bathyarca imitata (E. A. Smith, 1885) merits additional investigation. Widely distributed throughout the North Pacific; Cascadia Abyssal Plain, Wash- ington (48.6°N) [RBCM], south to the Golfo de Panamá (7.1°N) [USNM], in 1,463 - 3,500 m. This species has been collected in large numbers in abyssal depths. Literature: Keen (1971: 50).
