Littoraria irrorata (Say, 1822) Marsh Periwinkle
Distribution: New Jersey to Florida to Texas. Size: 25 mm (1 inch).
Description: Color whitish-gray with streaks of purple or reddish-brown on spiral cords; shape elongate-conic, thick; sculpture with numerous rounded, somewhat thickened spiral ribs; with 8 to 10 flat-sided whorls; sutures somewhat obscure; body whorl half the height of shell; aperture oval, outer lip strong and sharp with grooves on inner side; operculum corneous.
Habitat: Typically on marsh grass stems and roots at or above high-tide mark; also on hard substrates at or above tide line.
Remarks: Sometimes confused with L. nebulosa, which has a convex body whorl, different columella, and finer spiral ribs. See Bequaert (1943); Andrews (1977). Synonym: Littorina irrorata (Say, 1822).
