This is a Mediterranean species which occurs in shallow offshore waters and reaches a maximum size of about 9mm. There are up to 8-9 teleoconch and at least 2 protoconch whorls. The shell is tan. It has about 12 low broad costae per whorl which may be angled around the center of the whorls. Spiral sculpture consists of rows of tiny pits. The outer lip is thickened and the aperture is oval. The suture is crenulated. This species does not have a basal ridge.
O. mauritanica Talavera, 1975, which was found off Mauritana, may be a synonym. While it is strongly angular around the center of the whorls, it appears to fall within the range of 0. hellenica.
