Tegula fasciata: Shell depressed conical, with a somewhat rounded spire and rather blunt apex; Whorls rounded , below, and flattened or faintly concave above, smooth, with the exception of very faint, wavy, revolving lines and equally faint growth lines; lip thick, sometimes double and faintly ridged within; umbilicus moderate, with one strong ridge within. The shell shows a great variety of coloring; the ground may be yellowish red or various shades of brown, with fine, revolving rows of small, angular white spots. There is generally a light band on the rounded periphery, and there may be blotches or irregular, radiating, whitish flames above.
Height, 12; diameter, 15 mm.

Tegula fasciata: Tegula fasciata (Born, 1778) Silky Tegula
Distribution: South Florida, Texas; West Indies to Brazil. Size: 12 to 18 mm.
Description: Color reddish-brown with patches of different shades of red, brown, black, and/or white; shape turbinate; teleoconch with finely sculptured whorls, possessing strong cords with about 3 spiral striae between cords; whorls slightly concave at suture; typically a narrow band of color at deep, round, smooth periphery; umbilicus white; aperture rounded with teeth at base of columella; operculum multispiral. Habitat: Common on Thalassia, on algae, and under rocks from low-tide line to a depth of 90m(295 ft).
Remarks: Dead shells commonly found in beach drift around Port Isabel and Port Aransas. However, one incidence of a live specimen was reported by P. McGee from Port Aransas. SeeTunnell and Chaney (1970); Andrews (1977). Synonyms: T. picta Tenison Woods, 1877; T. substriatum Pilsbry, 1889.
