Popis

four-toothed chrysalis snail

Shell minute, cylindrical with up to seven convex whorls; four teeth recessed within aperture: a ridge-like one on parietal wall, a roundly triangular one on columella and two inside outer lip, the lower one usually slightly more elongate and stronger; lip of aperture thin and flaring when mature; umbilicus open, narrow; somewhat glossy, sculptured with microscopic oblique axial threads. Translucent, buff to pale orange-brown, apertural rim and teeth white. Length up to 3.3 mm. Head-foot dark grey.
Widely distributed in Africa from Somalia and Ethiopia to the southern Cape. For such a widespread species, it has been found at relatively few localities in our region, mostly in the central and southern parts. In KwaZulu-Natal it is found mostly inland of the coastal scarp to 1,900 m, and records from the coast require confirmation. In the eastern Cape its distribution extends to sea level. Tolerant of a wide range of conditions, but seems to favour somewhat drier environments; under stones and amongst accumulations of leaf-litter.
