Hastula cinerea (Born, 1778) Gray Atlantic Auger
Distribution: Florida, Texas; West Indies; Brazil. Size: 25 to 68 mm.
Description: Color grayish with a purplish tinge, white band below suture and a broader reddish-gray band below that; shape tall, slender, conic; sculpture of whitish axial ribs that originate at suture and terminate almost halfway down the whorls; sigmoid axial ribs extend to base of shell on body whorl; whorls flat sided, glossy, elongate; microsculpture of cancellate axial and spiral rows of punctae; spire pointed and smooth; aperture pointed anteriorly at anal canal; flared and flattened posteriorly at siphonal canal; outer lip thin; base of columella pointed.
Habitat: Intertidal in mud and sand at depths from 0 to 27 m (90 ft). Remarks: Studies have shown H. cinerea feeds by paralyzing polychaete worms and swallowing them whole. See Ode and Speers (1967a); Andrews (1977); Redfern (2001).
