Popis

Description: Shell large (between 92.9 and 150.0 mm, occasionally up to 162.5 mm), rather thick, solid. Shape broad with high spire. Whorls convex. Subsutural slope slightly convex, broad. Colour reddish brown, occasionally with paler axial streaks. Spiral cords usually slightly darker, occasionally white on top. Paratypes 3 & 4 pale yellowish. Paratype 5 snow white. Protoconch decollate in all adult specimens, about 6 teleoconch whorls remaining. First teleoconch whorl with 1 strong, sharp angulation, gradually forming a keel along second whorl. Third whorl with 1 strong keel and 1 suprasutural cord, subsutural slope with 7 or 8 broad, flat secondary spiral cords of equal strength with the exception of the last but one which is slightly stronger. Body whorl with numerous broad, flattened spiral cords of unequal strength, 2 primary ones on periphery strong, gradually becoming weaker towards base. Interspaces with 2-7 fine, flattened secondary spiral cords of which the central one is occasionally stronger. Aperture oval, rather broad, white. Outer lip rather solid, brownish, edge white. Columella gently curved, callus thick, white. Siphonal canal short, broad, open, with prominent, deep siphonal fasciole. Range and habitat: Neptunea occaecata n. sp. is a high-boreal to Arctic species, living in the western Bering Sea off Kamchatka Peninsula and off the northern Kuril Islands. It lives in moderately deep water (210 m) on sandy and muddy bottom. Comparison: Neptunea occaecata n. sp. has a thick and solid shell with broad, slightly flattened primary spiral cords. The subsutural slope is straight without subsutural cord. The colour is rather uniformly yellowish to pale brown... Form praerosa var. n. differs from the typical form by its bigger size, broader whorls with convexer upper part and a rough surface.".... "The biggest specimen was discovered in the Pacific Ocean south-east off Paramushir Island, belongs to varietate praerosa and has an age of 23-24 years, a shell height of 176 mm, diameter 118 mm, height of last whorl 139 mm, height of aperture 112 mm, width of aperture 65 mm, length of siphonal projection 44 mm and width of siphonal canal 16 mm.... Form praerosa var. n. differs from the typical form in having a bigger size, broader whorls with convexer upper part and a rough surface." (Golikov, 1962: 6, translated from Russian). Neptunea laticostata, hitherto the nominal subspecies of "var. praerosa", differs in having 2 sharp keels (primary spiral cords) on the spire whorls, fine spiral cords on the base, finer secondary spiral cords, one slightly stronger secondary spiral cord in the middle of the interspace which is situated just above the shoulder, dark red coloured primary spiral cords, a thinner shell and a slightly slenderer shape. Neptunea alexeyevi n. sp., of which the broad form may be similar in shape, differs in having 3 sharp keels (primary spiral cords) on the spire whorls, sharper primary spiral cords and finer secondary spiral cords. Neptunea costaria n. nom. has a similar subsutural slope, but differs in having 2 slightly stronger spiral cords on the subsutural slope, 2 or 3 primary spiral cords on the upper spire whorls and 4 on the penultimate whorl, narrower interspaces on the body whorl, usually a broader shape with shorter spire and a smaller adult size. Etymology: Neptunea occaecata n. sp. is named after the Latin verb occaecare, meaning "to blind", which refers to its formerly undetected appearance among a collection of Neptunea laticostata.
