Shell to 55.0 mm in length but frequently smaller, elongate-fusiform, constricted basally, teleo-conch of 8.5-9.5 slightly convex whorls, protoconch of 2.5-3 conical, glassy-white embryonic whorls; post-embryonic whorls with 3 spiral cords, cords sometimes granulose, penultimate whorl with 4-7 cords and body whorl with 20-32 cords; spiral cords are either uniform in size or smaller intermediate cords may be present. Axial sculpture consists of axial striae which are either confined to the interspaces or override cords giving the shell a rough, scabrous appearance. Aperture longer or shorter than the spire, narrow, smooth within, outer lip constricted basally and either convex or angulate at anterior third, crenulate on edge, columella with 4-5 distinct folds. White to cream in color, ornamented with rusty-brown axial zones which usually form 2 broad, interrupted bands on body whorl, aperture stained brown.
