Adult size 5.9 to 8.0 mm. Shell uniformly brown or yellowish brown, brown with a white band below the suture, or white with a brown band below the suture. Protoconch 3.2-3.5 whorls. Teleoconch with 4.5 to 5.0 whorls; whorls convex, grading to straight-sided up the spire. Spire concave, 44-47% of shell length. Axial ribs and spiral cords over entire teleoconch; 25 to 36 axial ribs and 21 to 28 spiral cords on body whorl. Axial ribs beaded at intersections with first one or two subsutural spiral cords. On outer lip, axial ribs reduced in strength and more closely spaced than elsewhere on whorls. Outer lip with 8-11 elongate denticles; apertural lirations lacking. Outer lip with small posterior sinus just below suture. Columella with four or sometimes five plications.

Tomlin & Shackleford (1914) recorded several specimens from Sao Tome, under the name Mitra (Thala) foveata. We were able to locate only one of these (Fig. 76; NMW, uncataloged); it proves to be conspecific with Mitromica africana. The specimens we report from Senegal represent a range extension of some 3000 km to the northwest. Mitromica africana is the only species of Mitromica in the Atlantic with a multi-whorl protoconch, which indicates a planktonic stage in larval de-velopment
