Popis

Very small, strongish, oblong, with straight slopes before and at the sides, and markedly concave behind; the apex is very small, and it alone projects backwards; the surface is finely cancellated ; the slit is lozenge-shaped. Sculpture: There are very many slightly irregular, coarsish, radiating riblets crossed by concentric threadlets, which are rather finer and closer but somewhat more irregular, and which form minute knots in crossing the riblets; from this sculpture results the basket-work appearance from which the name of the species has been adopted. Colour white, with a faint tinge of ruddiness. Apex is exceedingly minute; and it is the little embryonic spiral alone which projects; the entire number of whorls is only 1,75. Slit roundish, but acute in front, and drawn out behind (where it is closed by the septum) into a sharp point so as to be lozenge-shaped when viewed in its entire length. Margin straight on the sides, scarce appreciably broader behind than before; the edge is bevelled off so as to be quite sharp. Inside glassy; feebly marked with the ribs, which, as well as the concentric threads, shine through as transparent; the opening up into the apex is narrow and deep, but not pointed; there is no anterior furrow; the slit, as seen from within, is roundish, pointed in front, and truncated behind by the short, thin, triangular, straight-edged, little-oblique septum. L. 0.12 inch. B. 0.08 inch. H. 0.06 inch.

Shell very small, about 4 mm. in length, a dull white and highly sculptured. It is very variable in height, which may be from 50% to 85% of the length. Base broadly ovate. Anterior slope straight, posterior slope concave, expanding toward the margin. Apical whorls one and one hail* or one and three quarters, small, globose, and porcellaneous-white. They project backwards below the posterior end of the fissure and are turned to the right. Fissure roundish in front and drawn out and up behind, where it is closed by the septum, into a sharp point. The sculpture consists of numerous subequal, raised and somewhat irregular radiating ribs, crossed by concentric, raised threads which form nodules on crossing the ribs and divide the spaces between the ribs into squares. This gives rise to the basket-work appearance from which the name of the species was derived. Margin finely crenulated. Interior of shell glossy, with numerous, very fine, radiating riblets. The septum begins at the base of the apical whorls. At first it occupies an exterior position, then descends vertically, dividing the interior of the shell into two unequal parts, the posterior smaller than the anterior. Length 4,5 mm; Width 3 mm; Height 3,5 mm.

Shell small, solid, with a stout, conic, caplike shape, the anterior slope nearly straight, the posterior with a small hump in the middle. The base is ovate-elliptical with straight and parallel sides and semicircular ends. The apical whorls show a small reclining coil on the posterior side and in front of it a round orifice; in larger specimens, the apex is lost, only a stumplike base remains. The surface is much worn in all our specimens, but the original sculpture was probably coarsely reticulated with a meshlike net in which the radials and concentrics appear to have been of about equal strength; there are about 40 radial riblets all round, not quite equal in strength on the sides, crossed or intersected by about nine concentric cords. Measurement of the largest specimen, length, 1.96 mm., height, 1.37 mm.
This shell seems closely related to P. sportella Watson, but our identification is tentative, pending the discovery of more perfectly preserved specimens. Our specimens are all small, probably not mature, and all much worn. The Bocas shell agrees fairly well with Watson's species by its oval-elliptical base, the two ends with an equal semicircular curve, but its surface sculpture was probably much coarser. Farfante's figures of sportella in Johnsonia (1947, vol. 2, No. 24) do not agree with our specimens in any way.

Mclean & Geiger:
This species has clathrate sculpture beaded at intersections. The fine pits of the protoconch are not as dense as those of the species above but are taken as evidence of the generic assignment.

Watson:
This beautiful species is not improbably full grown, the very small apex seeming to indicate that the species is in its own nature minute. In outline it somewhat resembles Puncturella granulata, Seg.; in sculpture it has relations with Puncturella asturiana, Fisch., and Puncturella profundi, Jeffr. j in both respects it may be compared with Puncturella clathrata, Jeffr., but is unlike them all, and may be readily recognised by its minute apex.
P. sportella resembles in general shape P. circularis, but its cancellated surface makes it readily separable from the latter.
