Description

Shell rather small, biconical, colour in type faded. Protoconch short, a small nucleus followed by an inflated smooth whorl, sculpture appearing on the next whorl as faint axial threads. Mature whorls five, angled at the periphery, the shoulder wide and sloping, body whorl long and wedge-shaped, base not excavate. Sculpture of faint axial keels, about 12 to the whorl, fading on the base, and barely visible above the periphery. Spiral sculpture of faint threads, which on the periphery, however, break the axial ribs into three rows of ill-defined, low elongate tubercles. Aperture long, two-fifths of the total length, pyriform, outer margin thin, the fairly deep sinus on the shoulder, margined above by a heavy callus pad, the canal moderately long, wide and open. Inner margin slightly sinuous with a continuous band of callus. Length 12.5 mm., width 4.5 mm., aperture 5 mm.

Interchangeable taxa

This specimen first was labelled as P. spadix. When Hedley published his monograph in 1922, the true spadix had not been seen again, and there was considerable doubt as to its identity. It is thus understandable that this specimen was referred to Watson's species. Now that spadix has been identified the difference is at once apparent. A good recognition point of kemblensis is the long aperture, two-fifths of the total length. It is rather doubtfully referred to Paracuneus as the sculpture is rather too strong, and the base is not so truly wedge-shaped as in the genotype.

Distribution

Australia. New South Wales. 63-75 fathoms off Port Kembla.
