Description

Shell small, slender, with a very high, acute, turreted spire; after about 3 smooth tumid larval whorls, those subsequent carry a heavy squarish beaded carina on the shoulder, a strong cord below the suture, a somewhat lesser cord above the suture, and several on the base, in addition to which are various minor spirals; axial sculpture of rather sharp incrementary threads which are strongly retractive above the carina and protractive below it. Aperture narrowly ovatopyriform, unarmed, narrowing to a minute squarish sinus above, contracting sharply below into the long slender canal; outer lip thin, sharp, with a deep narrow anal sulcus; columella nearly straight. Color warm brown, the summit of the carina and much of the spire nearly white. Alt. of holotype 18.0, max. diam. 5.3, alt. of aperture including canal 8.0 mm.

Type Locality: Probably off San Jose Id., Gulf of California

Commentary: The narrow form, high, acutely turreted spire, and strong beaded carina are features of this species shared by no other of our turrids, but G. hindsiana seems with little doubt to be conspecific with the long-lost Pleurotoma gemmata Hinds 1844 (not of Conrad 183 5), which is the genotype of Gemmula.
