Description

Shell of medium size, conical, colour uniformly yellow brown. Protoconch fairly large, of smooth, glassy whorls, the initial whorl small and oblique, the next inflated. Mature sculpture gradually appears, first as a median spiral keel, with fine spiral threads, crossed by curved axial threads. Mature whorls six, angled at the periphery, excavate above to the sutures. Sculpture numerous fine spiral keels, that on the periphery double, equally spaced below, and alternately larger and smaller, close together, and persistent to the tip of the columella. Above the periphery the spiral threads are closely packed and separated from the suture by another double keel. The transverse sculpture ascends the whorl rather obliquely from the inner margin of the aperture, as closely spaced threads, overriding the keels and breaking into minute rounded tubercles, about three to the mm. on the body whorl. Above the peripheral keel, the tuberculation is more irregular, but bends forward in curved lines to the suture. Aperture pyriform, comparatively short. Outer margin broken in the type, but enough of the sinus left to show it similar to other species, and at the end of the peripheral keel. Inner margin nearly straight, flat and broad, covered with a sheet of callus, columella broadly acuminate, canal narrow and slightly twisted. Length 15.5 mm., width 5.5 mm., aperture 5.6 mm.

Interchangeable taxa

This is a very distinctive species, not readily confused with any other on the coast. The fine tuberculation should make its future recognition easy.

Distribution

Australia. New South Wales. Type Locality: 30-35 fathoms off Port Stephens; 40-50 fathoms off Manning River.
