Hedley described the type from Port Jackson and a subspecies stephenensis from Port Stephens. The subspecies was described as larger, with fewer radials. and orange on the base. The species is not very common and limited material is available for study, but this suggests that it is individually variable and cannot be separated into distinct races. The dimensions are: Length 8.5 mm., width 3.2 mm., aperture 4 mm. Another specimen, from Pittwater, was first taken for a distinct species, but conforms generally to the description, and is considered the extreme variation. It is smaller and broader, the length 6 mm., width 2.6 mm. and aperture 2.5 mm.

G. fascinus is related to G. pictus, but may be distinguished by its relatively longer aperture, less shouldered whorls and more rounded axial ribs.
