Irregularly oval or narrowly elongated, often with clasper spines, compressed, solid, purple-red to golden brown, radially plicate with saw-toothed margins; interior usually white, chomata re-stricted to margin near hinge or on entire margin, anal funnel present. North Carolina to Florida, Bermuda, Bahamas, West Indies, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Central America, South America (to Brazil). Length 47 mm (to 50 mm). Formerly in Lopha. Note: The habitat of this species is oceanic. The right valve of this specimen has been drilled by a predatory gastropod. Also known as "Coon" (i.e., Racoon) Oyster.
