Fossarus compactus Dall, 1889 Compact Fossarus
Distribution: North Carolina, Florida, Texas. Size: 2 mm
Description: Color yellowish-white with spire a darker tan; shape subglobose; shell stout; sculpture of 4, regularly spaced, multispiral whorls; nuclear whorl polished; aperture rounded with a short, thickened parietal lip; outer lip thickened; umbilicus of a somewhat elongate slit; anomphalous. Habitat: On offshore banks and reefs.
Remarks: A common, widely distributed species found on the Texas coast at depths from approximately 18 to 154 m (60 to 505 ft). However, no live specimens have been collected. See Ode (1987c). Synonym: Gottoina compactus (Dall, 1889).
