Dendropoma irregulare (d'Orbigny, 1841) Irregular Wormsnail
Distribution: Texas, Florida to Brazil; Bermuda. Size: Diameter of tube 3 to 6 mm .
Description: Color gray to bluish-brown; shape variable, appearing in colonies as well as individually, typically individuals are irregularly coiled; sculpture on unattached portion of shell thick with radial ribs; underside or apex attached to hard substrate, flattened; aperture round and thin; operculum obscure to lost.
Habitat: Commonly found in large aggregates on hard substrates at depths from 0 to 7 m (23 ft).
Remarks: The shell is recognized by its wide, roughened, multiannulated, tubular shell. Although Spiroglyphus irregularis (d'Orbigny, 1842) is a functional synonym, it is invalid because it originated from an occupied polychaete genus. See Vokes and Vokes (1983); ICZN (1987, Opinion 1425).
