Description

DISTRIBUTION: Hedley's species was described from off the Shackleton Ice Shelf (96°13'E) in 954 m. In the Ross Sea it has been collected al two stations, in 860 m and 2897-2907 m.
REMARKS: Warén (1980: 199-200, figs 25,51) listed S. polaris amongst species described as Stilifer and illustrated the type, which had obviously been damaged since it was originally figured, commenting that "This species may belong to Toledonia". The Ross Sea spécimens do not match Hedley's figure of polaris exactly, having more swollen spire whorls and a much shorter aperture without the long twisted columella shown by Hedley. The spécimen from Eltanin Stn 2113 was collected alive and showed a long extended proboscis and a brown, horny operculum. Il certainly is a eulimid, and the présence of an operculum would place it in Stilapex rather than Stilifer.
Although the Ross Sea spécimens differ from the holotype of S. polaris it would be inadvisable to describe this form until more material is available so that the degree of variation can be assessed.
